Turkey donations to the Community Awareness Program in Wakefield and Trinity Mission in Castleford.
This year we will again be donating turkeys at Christmas time to the Community Awareness Program in Wakefield and Trinity Mission in Castleford. We have been glad to do this for several years now to help out with their Christmas meals. The good people who run these organizations do a tremendous job all year round feeding those in need.
Lucky the Duck still going strong
Some people may remember Lucky the duck who was mysteriously found living amongst our geese in 2013. We never found out where he came from and probably never will.
He is however still living in the lap of luxury with our friend Dawn.
We were recently involved in the filming of channel 4's The Great Northern Cookbook with Sean Wilson (Martin Platt of Coronation Street fame). We supplied several geese to go into a Denby Dale Pie which Sean made from the original recipe. A great day was had by all and the pie was wonderful. .
Tim was guest speaker at the NFU North East Region Autumn Turkey Marketing Meeting on the 28th September. He talked about all aspects of our business from inception to the present day. In true Tim style he also gave his audience a few laughs by regaling some of the funny experiences we have encountered on the way. A sense of humour is an essential ingredient in this job.
October has been a busy and eventful month. The 14th October saw us just outside Worchester at the annual Goose Producers farm walk and meeting. The weather was kind, and the day was enjoyable and informative. During the meeting we were ‘asked’ to become members of the Goose Producers council, which we were proud to accept, even though it will mean trips to the ‘BIG’ city for meetings. Cities, especially big ones are not Tim’s favourite places.
The proof is in the taste
Cooked samples of our turkeys and geese went down very well at the Country Side Live Event, held at the Harrogate Show Ground on the weekend of 23rd and 24th October. Although this proved to be a very hectic few days, the very positive comments we received confirmed what our customers have been telling us for years, our turkeys are fantastic
Monday 25th October we were delighted to receive a visit from Annie Stirk in her capacity as Food and Wine Consultant for Yorkshire Life Magazine. Annie is cooking and preparing food to create a sumptuous Christmas table, using food from local producers. This will be photographed and form a double page spread in the December addition of the magazine. We were delighted when she asked to use one of our turkeys as the centre piece.
Fame at last ?
Tues 26th October saw us and our turkeys and geese being filmed for the Regional Food Group. The group which champions food from Yorkshire is compiling a series of short films showcasing their members. We were delighted to be asked to take part, but confess we are waiting nervously to view the results !!!
Some of the pupils from Thornhill Junior and Infants came to visit us
Today proved to be a really enjoyable day on the farm. Some of the pupils from our local primary school – Thornhill Junior and Infants came to visit us, as part of their local food project – 'Fight for the Future'.
They spent their time looking at and finding out about the crops we grow and our methods of turkey and goose production. The geese and very young turkeys proved very popular, as did the tractors. During their visit the pupils showed great delight, interest and were very well behaved. We hope to forge further links in the future.
